Quarterhorse Racing
Last night on TV for the first time I saw quarterhorses racing. I have seen plenty of thoroughbred racing and even some Arab horses racing, but I was still surprised by how fast the quarterhorses were.
If I heard correctly, one race over a distance of a quarter of a mile was run in just over 15 seconds. Can that be right? - 1 mile in a minute which is 60 miles per hour. I will have to read up on and find out more about quarterhorses in the coming weeks.

Hmm… for a sprint, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was close to that! I know that our most famous two mile race - the Melbourne Cup is run in a few minutes so wouldn’t be surprised if something as short as a quarter of a mile could be done at speeds such as that!

I have just quickly checked this on the internet and 35-40mph speed is for thoroughbreds over longer distances. The quarterhorse is the fastest breed and can sprint at up to 55mph. I owned an ex-racehorse many years ago and he went fast enough for me!
